From my outsider perspective, I believe the main changes came from effectively abolishing the gold standard (1933) and having fiat currency instead and Keynesian economics taking place where all incentives were now towards consumption and there's massive disincentive for saving, which is what's mainly necessary for buying a house, car, sustaining your family, i.e. financial security in general.
