Next year, our budget will be larger than the French budget and we aim to be back over 200,000 active soldiers by 2025... well above the French military size (not counting your gendarms which are just policemen) and way above the British size.
We have committed to 2% GDP spending and we'll get there. As our GDP is so much larger than the French and British GDP, this means we are going to have a way more capable military - a lot of combat robots will be in it too.

Times have changed, I personally think that there should be at least half a million (500,000) to defend ANY country at any said moment. But even that is increasingly difficult for some European countries, mostly because the stomach for war is gone and politicians rather just lecture you publicly rather than draw the sword and use it for battle like it used to be done.
Here's a fact....Britain,Germany, France, Spain, Portugal have all been affected by terrorist attacks. If this would have happened 100 years ago this would have easily caused a war with their empires being used to strike back. Now it's just ''We condone the violence used, and urge the international community to stand with us.'' with nothing being actually done.

Despite our lack of soldiers, we still have one of the best military forces in the world. Technology is where it's at today, not raw numbers. A thousand people can't do shit to a top of the line bomber jet.

The problem with professional soldiers is that they just won't fucking die.
They get seriously wounded and need expensive health care for the rest of their life. It's much cheaper to use Territorial Army volunteers who have minimum training and are much better at not staying alive.
It's the same reason they cut back on professional fire fighters.
A soldier's job is to win or die. There is no in-between.
