True. Alcoholism can a form of degeneracy.
But we owe much of our Western culture to acoholics, esp in the realm of the arts and literature.
It is folly to think that the creative spirit is exclusively orderly, and that it doesn't come with massive risks to one's health. The ordered, disciplined, put together people make good foot soliders, but not necessarily good virtuosi. That is something that is often too dangerous for the rank and file to attempt.

Some of these men were great men not because they drank, but despite drinking - some people can drink a lot of alcohol and be kind of ok - they have very good genes - this is a rare minority - your genes are probably normal just like everyone else. I remember reading some form of study a few years back, that medical doctors and scientists actually got to studdy Ozzy and legitimately considered him a human form of evolution. There was some shit in there about him having an astronomically higher threshold for drugs and alcohol abuse than any average human of his size and stature. I have no idea where though, but it was pretty interesting.
