If you want that real cowboy shit, they do still make black powder guns. I just here recently got a Pietta reproduction of the Remington 1858 New Model Army, that I'd been eye-balling forever, and so far it's been as fun a toy as I thought it would be.
Some things to note about black powder firearms, they are not categorized as firearms by federal law. So there's no 4473, and no need to ship to an FFL. They will ship a cap 'n' ball revolver to your front door along with as many pistol balls, grains of black powder, percussion caps, and wads and such as you could possibly want, no questions asked. Don't matter if you're a convicted felon, mentally insane, or legally blind. You're allowed to own a black powder gun (in like 45 states in the union, at least).
Of course, they're not really a terribly economical option, if you're a criminal looking to get a gun you can probably just buy a Hi Point from Tyrone and save money in the bargain.

I have a pre-lock S&W 686 4" and it's definitely my favorite of my current pistols to shoot. So I'd recommend that, though something single action only might be more your speed if you really want some cowboy stuff.
I also have a LCR that I carry but its not anywhere near as fun at the range, if thats your main use. Nice little carry gun though.
