I sort of agree with him, but he assumes the United States will continue to exist. This is currently a rather big assumption on the trajectory we are currently headed.

This guy just blithely dismisses our collapsing demographics and actually pretends they are a STRENGTH rather than a serious detriment. He's either deluded or a shill. One specific example - he talks about how great it is that the US has an interior river system, but doesn't mention that the system is increasingly becoming a mess as old locks fail or have to be taken offline. We can't repair them because we're spending our money on gibs and military shit. The Missouri River barely even handles cargo anymore.

I know what this guy is TRYING to do - he's using something called "factor endowment" analysis, looking at the very broad-scale geographic/geological features of the US, and projecting results from there. The problem is, demography is also a major factor, but his analysis of demography ends with age pyramids. The US is currently developing into a country with a wealthier, older class of whites and a giant mass of comparatively-impoverished (and increasingly angry) nonwhites. That's horrible. I don't look forward to the results of this demography.

"Taking over" is the wrong concept here. The problem with the US relates to internal stability. That problem exists independently of Chinese/Russian/etc. behavior. In other words, China doing or not doing X or Y is not going to make the internal problems of the US any BETTER to have.

The Brazilian "agricultural strategy" was to bus a handful of barely literate farmers from the South to the Center/West region in the 70s and give them free plots of land, and 20 years later we're the second largest basedbean producers in the world and most of our production isn't even GMO.
Also his statement about waterways being the cheapest way to transport goods domestically is dishonest at best. Cheapest doesn't mean most efficient. There are other factors that come into play with logistics. It would be "cheaper" to hire a Vietnamese child to carry a parcel on his back than it is to pay UPS to deliver it. So fucking what?

TL;DR: he words his speech in a way that makes mundane things outside the US seem incredibly complicated while oversimplifying whatever domestic advantage he can find in the US.

Waterways did make a huge difference. Considering back in the day when transportation wasn't as fast as it is now, using waterways to transport things back then is pretty beneficial in keeping us rich and productive

it's cheap to transport goods over water. be it rivers or oceans. it's how you ship goods from one place to another the cheapest way possible.

"back in the day" was a very small part of your history though. I think the first rail line to the west coast opened in 1865 or around that. The contribution of waterways to the US economic development has been negligible. This is an argument that could be made if America was around in the 16th century.
