This is the door leading to the room that was used a couple of times as an experimental gas chamber. only a few thousand people died here, mostly russian PoWs.
It wasn't used much because it had no ventilation and it took days to dispose f the bodies with only two ovens.
so they moved the gassing to two small farmhouses on the edge of camp adn burned the bodies with pyres, until they built the four huge undressing room, gas chamber and crematoria at Birkenau two Km away.
so this room was no longer used, and being underground, they converted it into an air raid shelter. they blocked up the original doorway, getting rid of the actual gas chamber door (which was metal, and moved to the outside of the building - pic related)
