Very easily: the Pope is not infallible. He is a man, like any other man. He is only infallible when he speaks ex cathedra (from the throne), which has only ever been done twice in history by the way. That is the only time that the Holy Spirit will not allow him to speak heresy or blasphemy. If I recall correctly, it was only ever done to solidify that divinity of Mother Mary and one other time for something that seemed relatively minor.
Francis is not the first terrible Pope in history. There have been dozens of awful Popes, sometimes there have been multiple Popes at the same time. As a Catholic, you are expected to respect and understand the hierarchy of the Catholic Church, but that does not mean you should blind yourself to the reality that the Church is a divine institution inhabited by undivine humans. The people may sin, the Church cannot. Does that make sense?
