call me when it gets a network stack

I use ubuntu for porn. Windows for everything else. Get on my level.

sounds inconvenient, why not use ubuntu fulltime?

My Windows PC has worked perfectly for 8 years

Linux on the other hand requires extreme autism just to set up

there's not much reason to use linux unless you need it for your job
I tried for years to make it work as a desktop OS but in the end I went back to macOS and Windows

if you're ok with macroshaft and their j**ish cronies harvesting your private data with no added benefit to you, then feel free to continue what you're using currently

and while i would have agreed with the "extreme autism" bit a decade ago, installing linux has become extremely simple in recent years.

>tfw plug in old printer into linux computer
>it is detected immediately, all functions just werk
this is unheard of in windows-land

Linux OS don't work with my processor for some reason.
I had to change the code just for it to install and now my ubuntu doesn't want to update and the only thing it's good for is streaming porn without getting a virus.

What kind of porn do you stream, m8?

>Linux OS don't work with my processor for some reason.
are you using one of those weird chinese MIPS laptops or something?
sounds like you borked your repos

Because I like sound and graphics acceleration.
Macfag reporting btw XD

Linux is pic related

fuck off back to Jow Forums

kys penguin-fucker.

Normal stuff man. Just wouldn't want to go on those websites with my windows which I use for everything.

Old Toshiba laptop, which I used for university, then when I finished with uni I installed ubuntu on it with great difficulty.

having to spend so much time and effort to get private internet/computing is so dumb, might as well stop using internet and mobile phones entirely. data is compromised at every turn now. even if you stop using computers and cellphones, the computers and cellphones of people around you will get data of you by proxy via the microphones and cameras, etc. the only solution is to go innawoods at this point.

My windows PC is working fine.

OS fags are the worst.

I agree in principle, but if you have a trustworthy OS then you can contain those issues to some degree.

But if you use an OS like windows that is actively hostile to the user, then the battle is over before it started.

Holy shit that actually makes sense as to why I have a MacBook

Linux is shit.
Windows is slightly less shit (it's actually a saner dev environment [eg case-insensitive FS]).

I can't wait for the OpenVMS port to x86; much, much better than Linux or Win. (Versioned FS, capable of native record-based files. Nice.)

true. can't believe people fell for the "free***" upgrade to Windows 10. when my current win 7 pc dies I'll try to go for linux next time.I set up a virtual box arch linux pc and the initial set up wasn't that bad, following a youtube video on it

>But if you use an OS like windows that is actively hostile to the user, then the battle is over before it started.
t. Someone who hasn't used UNIX.
web.mit.edu/~simsong/www/ugh.pdf

I use MacOS. It is basically a BSD.

Can I get a rundown on Windows 10 vs. Windows 7 spying?

>it's actually a saner dev environment [eg case-insensitive FS]
i guess we can agree to disagree. IMO if ignoring case is important for your current development process, the choice of OS is the least of your concerns.
i don't have experience with file-systems that do versioning, but it seems most companies have moved to a version control system for whatever type of data they're working with (eg perforce for versioned binaries)

i originally felt the same say. i decided to switch from win7 to linux when EOL happens, but got started with linux early and got rid of windows when realizing i didn't need it anymore. i have been using linux at home, school, and work for over a year now and it has been smooth sailing all the way

that paper is talking about something different. it's saying the OS interfaces are designed in an un-intuitive way, and i agree to some extent.
however what MS is doing is completely different, and actually insidious. i'll ALWAYS take a slightly eccentric os over one that actively tries to undermine my personal privacy

>IMO if ignoring case is important for your current development process, the choice of OS is the least of your concerns.
I can tell you've never had to find the casing-error when porting a project... or fix someone's "clever" idea of using This, THIS, this, and THis as different files. -- It's one of those experiences you don't forget.

More common are problems w/ Linux's fragile ownerships/permissions getting screwed up; but as I've not had to use a *nix in a few years it hasn't bugged me.

> i don't have experience with file-systems that do versioning,
It's actually really nice to have in the FS.

> but it seems most companies have moved to a version control system for whatever type of data they're working with (eg perforce for versioned binaries)
Honestly most companies are idiots; only a few years ago it was common for "versioning" to be ZIP-files.

If you're going to use versioning for SW dev, you may as well use it in such a way that you essentially get Continuous Integration for free -- but this requires having a sane (non-text based versioning system) built on a DB; see citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.26.2533&rep=rep1&type=pdf -- the system described there has the nice property that every version/update to the root-node of the DB corresponds to a compilable/working build.

>leeeennnnoooox

>in 2018

Yeah sorry I want to actually do stuff with mu computer, not do stuff to my computer

i've had to fix the casing error before, but that's caused because the developer used windows and didn't know how the directory was actualy cased. the problem wouldn't exist if they used a case-sensitive file system to begin with

that's a really interesting way to get continuous integration, thanks for the link. i'll take a look.

Richard Stallman is a literal kike

Or really, theres just no way of using linux in my professional life. No support for any of the software I need, or the machines that are running on the shop floor. The webshop runs on a windows server environment, adobe CC isn't officially supported in linux, my accounting software isn't supported on linux, my offset printing presses operate on Windows server my Digital HP indigo runs on win XP, my RIPs run on windows server and the computer to plate laser machine runs on windows too. Even with all the goodwill in the world, linux has no place or justification in my life

I don't even have internet. get on my level.
