Basically, the US coerced China, through the threats of economics warfare, to itself both threaten to abandon North Korea if it didn't make peace and get rid of its nukes, but also to promise to North Korea that it would always protect it.

They've shown them that they were ready. They've shown NK's own military who were monitoring the US' military exercises how powerful they are too. A lot of those people thought the NK military was invincible. Now a lot of them might have realized that the attack against SK really would be a suicide attack.
And not only does this show that the threat of a war with SK might not be enough to protect them, but even the threat of nukes might end up not being enough to keep them safe IF they even get them. It all rested on the idea of another large scale war being unthinkable.

They'd still be dangerous with them though. Proliferation could be terribly destabilizing for the MAD doctrine. If too many actors have nukes, it becomes hard to tell who is REALLY behind an attack (how the fuck would you know who paid some random terrorist group to use a nuke on you?). So this might encourage more countries to try to use nukes and blame it on someone else. And in return this forces countries to retaliate against everyone else if they ever get nuked.
