They do get long sentences but commonly have other offences to take into consideration, or come across badly (wearing the wrong thing to court) and rarely testify on their own behalf because they can barely speak English. Their anger spills out too often. It's hard for a judge to feel sympathy for them. They rarely have supportive family with them. They rarely have a job to lose or to go back to. There's a million reasons a nigger might get a longer sentence than a white man and none of them are "racist"

I should clarify heinous acts which alter the nature of the crimes they commit. Such as body mutilation of a body during a murder or assault. As others have pointed out they tend to be less cooperated towards authorities and prejudice themselves in court.

If you just look at white people and black people, it's obvious black people spend more time in jail - but that is an unfair comparison. So let's control for crimes committed. Black people still get longer sentences - but that is an unfair comparison. So let's control, in addition, for prior convictions. Black people still get longer sentences.

For each control variable that you add, the sentence length of black people over white people diminishes, and you get closer to parity. So the problem is, how can you be sure this study controlled for all variables?

For example, how well did it control for good behavior? How well did it control for attitudes in the court? How well did it control for family life (dad's receiving lower sentences than single men)? Any of those, or other factors we haven't considered, could account for the discrepancy.
