It's probably derived from Abrahamic religious morality. There is an argument to be made for it apart from that. For example even in countries where drug use isn't criminal there are still rehab efforts. Just the government supporting mental health. Also lots of your citizens killing themselves isn't really a good image.

It's not illegal. You won't be posthumously charged with a crime for doing it, or charged with one for attempting it. However, police have a duty to protect life so they have to try (to some extent, if it puts them in too much danger and no one else is at risk they'll just let you do it though) to help you. If they're successful in stopping you, you don't go to jail for attempting a crime. You go to a psychiatric facility.

That's how it is in my state, other state laws may be different but I'm unaware of any law against suicide.
