Jesus established a Church because God knew we are weak and that without structure we fall to Shit. The Church is the structure to keep us adhering to the true faith instead of creating our own false religions like you protestants. But every structure needs a head, so Jesus tapper Peter to be the first Pope, and his successors have held it ever since. He doesn't replace Jesus. He just makes sure that the Church's doctrines (ie the doctrines of God) are enforced and taught throughout the Church.
