The only way we're ever going to unify is quite literally if an alien race decides that humanity has to die. Just look at packs of chimpanzees that hunt and kill baboons to eat. that's when there is a plethora of resources, and a high level of integration into the culture. And even then we have huge cliques of people who actively dislike one another for trivial reasons. There are people who want to kill one another based solely off their political ideology and not on the merits of their actions as human beings. If you don't have excess you can't have altruism or acceptance.
