what if instead of forcing society to treat these people as heroes, we treated them for what they are - sick, disabled, but intrinsically valuable as humans - and then try our hardest to invest in research programs that allow us to overcome it. Like we do for bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.

In fact the transgendered folks themselves do not see themselves as mentally ill, at least when it comes to their gender identity.
So instead of seeking treatment for a mental health issue, they seek medical affirmation of their delusions.
The more accepting society becomes of such affirmation, the more common those that seek such acceptance become.
It becomes less about any gender identity and more about being different from the herd.
So I do not believe this is a matter that is passed on through genetics, but a matter exacerbated by acceptance and promotion of acceptance.
