Ever since being a kid we were taught we won the war because we dropped the atomic bomb, we had to do it because we needed to save lives, or that Japs would never surrender. Trying to get a reasonable answer will be difficult. The truth is America didn't get an unconditional surrender and gave a surrender Japan had suggested before the bombs, cities had been fire bombed non stop and the people had gotten use to it, some of America's top generals were against the nuke and thought it pointless, and Russia's declaration of war also was a huge strike against the Japanese. There was a good quote flying around out there from one of the scientist who made the bomb that attended the a meeting about its use that said something on the lines of "not once did people ask if the bomb was something we should drop but instead where should we be dropping it."
