The transfer of the badly wounded on the heavy seas was a difficult business. I took no more pictures. I was busy lifting stretchers. The barge brought us to the USS Chase, the last wave of the 16th Infantry was just being lowered, but the decks were already full with returning wounded and dead.

This was my last chance to return to the beach. I did not go.

Despite the Pacific Theater, I'm of the firm belief that Soviet soldiers were subjected to the most inhuman conditions and treatment during WW2. The sad part is that it was their own government doing it, not the Nazis.

I've read that Barbarossa was Hell for the Soviets both before and after they managed to turn the tide. Between the Nazi tanks being a 3:1 match for the Soviets' hardware and the Soviet command shooting their own men for retreating I can't even imagine how awful it would have been.
