I think Germany and Europe are at the mercy of the USA, China, and Russia getting along. If a major world war breaks out, the superpowers are going to cut off the flow of raw materials to Europe as they will be needed for the war effort. Also Europe could be the location of major battles because superpowers don't like to fight on their own land. So its a real gamble for peace because you don't have a backup option. That being said the US is rotting for the inside out due to wasting all our GDP on war.

In the lifetime of many people these areas were scenes of the most brutal battles in human history with millions of dead German and Russian Soldiers. In Afghanistan, Germany was the only country where we had to double up when they took guard duty because they couldn't be relied upon to do their jobs.
