I go to Germany on a yearly basis to visit in-laws, and it's every bit as bad as you make it sound. I mean, there are quite a few beautiful old things, and even some nice wilderness (in the right areas), but the people are all cookie cutter replicas of one another - only superficially different. They all believe the same propaganda and reiterate the same ideas. I've met some slightly different people, but not a single significantly different one (though I'm sure they exist).
