The show is not that one dimensional.
His life was already awful before he got cancer. Cancer just put him over the edge. Everyone he grew up with and worked with surpassed him, he had a bitch of a wife, a handicapped son and a brother in-law that, in a sense, shoved in his face. He initially did it for both personal reasons and for his family. Further into the show it becomes clear that his personal desires are the main driver and that the altruistic motivators are only there to fool others but primarily himself. He finally redeems himself, in some smaller way, at the end of the show.
