Aristotle claims that Sparta became a second rate power because of gynocentrism in his book The Art of Rhetoric. He literally lived through the decline of Sparta (in a neighbouring greek state that is) so if anyone would know to truth it would be him. His claim is that the seemingly endless spoils of war made the spartan women decedent and fickle. This combined with their elevated status (compared to Sparta's contemporaries) made the state's foundation unstable (i.e. made family life unstable). When the spartan war machine stumbled and suffered a series of decisive (and economically crippling) loses, spartan women essentially withheld themselves from the men they saw as failures. It only took 50 years for Sparta, once the military capital of Greece, to become a near failed state and loose almost all of its influence.
