I would say San Sebastián. The food there is amazing and extremely cheap (pinchos). Also the town is beautiful and laid back, very chill. Nightlife is great also, bars swarming with nice people.

Barcelona is a big city and kind of a leftist stronghold. I personally like it because of its incredible architecture, I am very fond of Gaudi’s work, but it is the most cosmopolitan city in Spain. It’s a must tourism-wise, but for actually staying, not so much. That’s just my personal opinion though.

I would also add that Portugal, I think, is quite unique in insofar as the push from the left isn't chiefly deriving from the young, university-educated population but from the older commie types. I haven't had cause to speak with many young Portuguese but, in those instances where I have, it strikes me that the youth are often skeptical of the left, especially the new left. That's always a hopeful sign.
