I'm obsessed with asian culture, no not anime. Where should I focus my energies? I want to pick a nation and stick with it. I have been learning Mandarin and reading about China for a while now. I spend at least 10 hours a week on it.
But I wonder if maybe China is the culture or the past, and it is Japan I would rather focus on?
On the one hand, Japan adopted western ideals, and is the advanced for it. I also do enjoy Japanese people and feel a common bond with them.
On the other, China is a nation of the ages. It is a cradle of civilization, yadayada..
China has a long history but they’ve made plenty of mistakes. Japan’s history is also long but not as long as China’s but there are some incredible stories there that are admirable and definitely show you why Japanese people have so much pride in themselves.
It’s like studying the Hellenistic Greeks vs the Persians.

Depends on what you find interesting. Japanese (and Korean) culture has a lot of western influences, while China's culture has been properly ruined by Mao so neither is all that authentic. If you're want to look into their historical culture you'll have it easier in Japan because there's no censorship. >it is a cradle of civilization Maybe, maybe not.
