Why aren't there labor camps implemented for prisoners? Why should law abiding citizens waste their tax money on criminals when they could work for their freedom instead. That seems much better than to just let them rot in a cell all day. Make use of them instead.

When large scale prison labour was introduced in 19th century France all the workers got butthurt about their labour being devalued.

Manual labor isn't as common nowadays as it was in the past. It could be implemented again without much of a problem.

How much is the cost of a bullet?

It isn't really humane to execute someone because of stealing or tax evasion. You also benefit a lot more by having them working instead of just finishing them off.

The reason that forced labor from prisoners isn't used anymore actually has absolutely nothing to do with it being "inhumane" or some shit (at least not in the States).

It's because it directly competes with construction companies and government construction services like the Department of Transportation. They need reasons to embezzle millions of dollars to have guys literally not do shit because it rained that day or something. If they had cheap prison labor, those scumbags wouldn't be able to make any money. There was actually a somewhat famous case in Mississippi I think where a local construction company that was a contractor for the state's roads got caught bribing a local Congressman to outlaw work camps.

Yeah, it could fuck up the economy in a capitalistic country for sure. Maybe there is a way to fix this so that prisoners don't just sit on their ass and do nothing though. Seems like such a waste.

Incentivices the government to lock up people too easily because it gives the government slave labour.

>typical political correctness garbage
no wonder sweden is a mess

There are labor camps for prisoners.
Here in CA we give some non-violent offenders the option of working in a fire camp.
Basically they train to fight fires, and then get sent out to assist CALFIRE crews as needed.
Its a great program. Curbs the cost of firefighting and gives offenders the option to pursue the career after they are released. I think they can earn their qualifications while serving the time.
