Let's say you have 100 cars, each producing 1 unit of pollution per year. You would replace them with 100 electric cars that individually produce just 0.01 pollution units but the extraction, synthesis and shipment of the rare materials needed for the battery has produced 1000 units of pollution. Mining gear does not run on solar, it's likely diesel or electric powered from the grid (which, again, is most likely coming from fossil fuel. Shipping the ore across the ocean is likely made with huge tanker ships, all of them guzzling diesel while the waddle across the waves. At peak performance, the largest tanker engine would gulp 12 tons of fuel per hour. 12 TONS. PER HOUR. Go figure how long does it take to cross the Atlantic, nevermind the land trucks.
