Revolution was basically his way of working through his thoughts on communism. On some versions of the song you can hear him say "in" after "you can count me out." Basically he sympathized a lot with communist groups but couldn't bring himself to support them because of people like Mao. Lennon never really held strong convictions on anything and bounced around a lot ideologically. It caused him a lot of personal distress. Eventually he gave up trying to find an ideology to fit in with as evident in the lyrics to God.

When asked by Brian Epstein for a title to his autobiography, Lennon suggested "Queer Jew." The actual title was "A Cellar full of Noise" to which Lennon quipped "more like a cellar full of boys."
