I worked at gas stations for years since i was 16 making minimum wage at the same time going to highschool/college. I just picked a trade and got a certificate.

Sadly almost everyone my age is still going to school and living at home. It bothers me a bit because they're entitled to vote and I'm paying for their 'university experience'

Life is hard. It's never easy to climb out of a hole. Find a support structure in church or in school, find a job shitty or not and show up for your scheduled shifts and work that shit hard, keep your mouth shut so you don't create waves and keep your head down for as long as you can't afford to stick out because the nail that sticks out gets hammered down, make your own entertainment with board games or reading so you can save the income you have for more meaningful things, put ten to twenty percent of your paycheck into a savings account not a checking account a savings account and never touch it because cars can break down you can get sick or hurt so on so forth

My mom and step dad are pretty damned awesome. Dad(step) was drafted into Nam back in 67 and was there until the end in 73, got out of the army went into gov't work, met my mom 18 years ago, they started dating and he is a great guy. Mom had a string of successes and failures in both personal and professional life and struggled for a bit with two sons as a single mother but she went back to college and got her degree and started making real money while working two jobs and raising us. I want upward mobility, a first class standard of living, and the ability to escape abuse and not have to base a marriage on money. I went through the recession too. I don't mind contributing. I worked a job that paid under the table for five years and even then it wasn't that great. I'd rather pay the five bucks a month and give 10-20% in taxes so that I can have my insurance. I had a workplace accident (had something heavy shifted against me by an inexperienced new hire) at my cash job, broke my hand and wrist, had to pay for that shit out of pocket and still continued to work with a cast on. At some of the jobs I've worked with insurance I've gotten hurt, gotten time off, they paid for the care, got workmans comp and it was a million times better.
