They used to be huge, having arms and legs in law enforcement, the government, sports, and entertainment media, and more. The Italian mob was present everywhere and was heavily ingrained in American culture up until that end of the 20th century it seems.
Today there is almost no reference to the Italian mob's influence in politics, media, entertainment, sports, culture, etc. What happened? Did law enforcement finally catch up to them? How if they were so heavily ingrained in it? Were they replaced by another group behind the scenes? Or did they just dissipate because of a great deal of smaller reasons?

At the time when the mafia was strong, it didn't allow pedos into the ranks. You didn't have to be Italian, there were many blacks and jews who were associates (davis Jr for example). It was this exclusionary policy that was their strength and downfall. The mafia would come into an area and clean up the crime (that they weren't causing) making the streets safer, but would also act as the police. Given that they also lived in these areas, it was in their best interest to be good to the citizens. Pedos, by default, are the most harmful people to those under their control.
With this exlusionary policy came the Establishment's rise to power. The mafia didn't like to harm the people in general so they were limited in the crimes they could commit for profit. The pedo establishment on the other hand lived to be harmful.
As time went on, the mafia was squeezed out of power by the pedo establishment.
