As it seems, the military is far more right wing than the general public. That's not saying that everyone else is a leftist or neocon, SD seems to have around 25% support. Officers that aren't politicians stall their careers as majors or lt colonels (or naval equivalents), with good luck they get promotion to colonel as retirement gift if they managed to stay in that long without being forcibly retired.
