The first king of the union was King James IV of Scotland, who, when he took the English throne became King James I of England. Many people forget that the Scottish nobles set up the union and there were many violent protests in Scotland as a result. That is why you see so many of the political and upper classes in England have Scottish names like Blair or even Cameron. The Scottish nobles who sold out their country for land and titles then fled ot England because if they didn't their entire family would be wiped out as a result.

I'm not even Scottish, I'm from Banbury, but I spent 3 years in School in Scotland and their education system is far better and they don't paint their history with the 'We are amazing and people should love us' brush like the English schools do. Yes there's a difference between the invaders and the nations of this island. That doesn't mean that the latter should necessarily accept not governing their own nation state if they want to.
