Socialism is inherent to liberalism. Public Schooling for instance is essential in order to empower everybody in a liberal society. It allows people to exercise their own rights, and act in the defence of the rights of others. Some level of protection from poverty and such is needed to protect the rights of those vulnerable who had no choice such as children. The Liberal celebration of individualism is meaningless if individuals were so abandoned by their communities they never had a real chance to do so much as improve their lot in life.

Without some socialist elements liberalism is just idealism that does not in fact create a society of equality where individual rights are protected. However Liberalism doesn't prescribe that everybody should be made equal by socialism, simply that everybody should get a reasonable shot to thrive as individuals.

Many liberal ideologies recognize the importance of socialistic measures, ordoliberalism or social liberalism above all. That doesn't make them socialist, but still.

I consider myself a conservative, but I find myself repulsed by the idea of a "conservative general" and enticed by the idea of a "liberal general (sans antifa types)."

There is a general attitude among conservatives of obstinacy and suspicion toward new information and perspectives which I think may be the reason. It seems to be easier to get a liberal to adopt more conservative views than for the converse, and I do not attribute this to any intrinsic superiority of conservatism over liberalism. In truth, I despise thinking in those terms. I've been called an extreme centrist once, on this board, as an insult, but I think it actually suits me. The middle ground is the rational ground, generally; having a balance between liberal and conservative points of view makes for the most pleasing character.
