What I have found in my research is the optimal range for a spouse is genetic similarity on the level of 4th cousin. Not close enough for deleterious recessive alles to show up but close enough to have a high likelyhood of genetic comparability. You also want to make sure she has a strong instinct for having children, has no serious diseases running in the family, is intelligent etc. Take a good long look at the parents too. What her mom is like is probably similar to what she's going to be like in 30 years.
