1. your audio equipment affects it. shitty phone and laptop speakers and shitty headphones can't reproduce all the frequencies so you might only/mainly hear the high frequency harmonics which in isolation sound like yanny.
2. you being a stupid fucking brainlet affects it, similar to the blue and black dress crap. you're not hearing the voice in its full context and seeing a man talk in several sentences in a deep voice, you're hearing just one second or so, and you might be a tard who interprets the low frequency sounds as noise.

1. if your hearing is impaired in either high or low register, you will only hear one version
2. if your brain can hear both registers, it decides on itself which one is the signal and which one is background noise.

Laurel every time except once while entering the room. Until then, I couldn't even conceptualize how anyone could hear anything but Laurel, but I caught the right angle and heard "Yanny, Laurel, Laurel, Laurel" in one spot as I passed through. Thing is, I heard Yanny like Granny, not Yanny like Johnny which seems to be how most people that hear Yanny hear it.
