Technically the original AR-15 was select fire, and when the military formally adopted it they designated it the M-16. The actual rifle our US military carries is an AR-15. Just like the M9 is a Beretta 92, and the M249 SAW is an FN Minimi. Stop getting military designations and actual firearm models confused.
