So why should there be a federal law about it? States already regulate the proof of alcohol sold in their state. Pure grain alcohol is illegal in many states.

I suggest some cheap vodka that's been distilled several times. Never use 90+% isopropyl to clean a water pipe. It'll leave nasty residue on it and ruin the resin, making it sticky, foul smelling, and I'm sure you don't want to smoke the shit they put in it.

Well I'm pretty sure the denaturing agent is methyl alcohol, which is wood alcohol, and poisonous, but not an impurity. So you'd just take everything with it in the process, and most likely have some really smooth tasting poison as the end result.

you can distill this out. Usually they have denaturing agents such as benzene, formadehyde and other crap so that people don't drink. Distilling is basically evaporating liquids based on the difference between their boililng points. Usually if the difference is about 15 C in boiling points, then it's worth distilling it. If it's smaller than that, it's might be difficult unless you have a very complicated apparatus and you are wiling to wait for a long time, but you also have to take into account the fact that ethanol will evaporate at faster rates than at room temp, so if you distill it, you will lose some of the ethanol as well in the process.

Just buy HPLC grade ethanol - now that one is pure 100% C2H5OH, it costs a pretty penny, but i heard from my friend that it's worth it. He went on a river trip with his buddies and before that he made an order to his lab to get some HPLC grade ethanol through his advisor. He took the bottle and he mixed it with river water, which was very clean since it was very far away from any city so thus minimal pollution. He and his friends made their "vodka" by mixing it 50/50 by volume and drank all night. Interestingly enough nobody had a hangover the morning after, which made them think that it's not the ethanol that makes your head hurt, but the impurities in the alcohol.

If you have a distillery set up why would you try to separate the poison from raw ethanol instead of just making your own ethanol without the poison?

I was just trying to describe to him how difficult it would be to distill crap out of denatured alcohol. Making your own ethanol is better of course as long as you have the means to analyze how pure it is. GC-MS would probably be best but then again a good used GC-MS can be like a new car price wise.
