You have to be the first to declare in the abandoned thread that you are baking. When the thread starts panicking and it is clear we do not have a baker, you have to declare in the thread you are pinch baking.
Undeclared pinch bakes, even with lower post numbers are not the legitimate heir. They are splits due to a lack of coordination on the part of the undeclared-but-technically-first baker.
