Similarly, note how Rembrandt's work would not be possible without Caravaggio, and Goya's work would not be possible without Rembrandt.

Art, thus, does not take place in a vacuum, but is the out product of a tradition.

2. Since Picasso, Matisse, and especially Duchamp, the notion of a tradition in art has been effectively abolished.
