Each "State" in the "United States" is it's own country with it's own constitution and it's own laws, and it's own house and senate, Who agree to be bound by federal laws, a federal congress and a federal "President" who the states elect. So long as the Federal Government acts in the interest of the state. Should a state feel that it's not being fairly represented it may set in motion to secede from the United States.

This right here is why the popular vote doesn't matter, it comes down to how the states vote. States usually vote in the direction that the majority of their population votes. But they don't have to. You could have 90% of the state vote for Trump, but choose to go with Hillary because they feel it's best for the country.

Though states typically don't go away from what their populace votes, out of respect and fear of it's populaces opinion and willingness to act against the state if the state doesn't represent the populace.

The "Popular Vote" is a total vote Tally of the entire United States, which represents 50 different nations, guided by one federal government. Due to how large states are, including population the founders saw the need for the States to determine who they want to represent them, and not the population, or you would literally have one party always winning over another.

It's not brain science, to understand that groups of people flock together, and people who live in cities are more susceptible to feel one way over another through group think mentality.
