I see the inability of the current Islam to somehow capitalize on their expansionist doctrine in their inherent mindset as marauders ... although this per se would not exclude successful empire building, we've seen this with the Indoeuropean expansions as well as with the first initial wave of Islamic invasions in the Middle ages. But these had one thing in common ... they immediately took over the societal structures of the civilizations subjugated, creating lasting states with them as the ruling caste. Current Islam is incapable of this as their main aim is to introduce Sharia law which is frankly an inferior ruleset beyond simple tribal organization. Therefore their conquests are doomed to be short-lived unless they were willing to adapt better-suited societal mechanisms upon conquering any territory.

Expansion. Expansion at all costs. The alternative is extinction in the long term. And since we have spread all over this world already (and cannot even truly expand at the expense of other populations due to the paralysing grip that the MAD doctrine has on geopolitics) the only boundary yet to cross is beyond this heap of rocks we dwell on. Therefore, our only current aim as a species would be to cross the technological threshold to efficiently achieve the logical next step in expansion ... meaning that every culture, every individual not fit for (or even actively sabotaging) this goal is dead weight.
