To be able to get a permanent residency visa, you absolutely need either a degree with 3 years of higher education.
Or, for a skilled worker visa : 10 years of experience in the specific job you intend to do there.
You will also need to have an employer ready to hire you there, pretty much like in the US.

Parts of Japan have already been westernized. If you're trying to escape western culture, stay away from Tokyo and Osaka. Maybe Hokkaido (Hokkaido is only 50% westernized, so it's a good break from western culture while at the same time not being completely alienating)

Places to consider for 0% westernization, I would say places like Kobe, Kyoto, and Nagoya should be high on your list

I have a degree, but I'm not getting any younger, so I don't think that going back to some childish dream instead of focusing on the here and now is the right move. So you're past the halfway-point of your life? Yeah, once you get that old moving to Japan is pointless. Most scholarships and visa options start to shut off at 35 years old for this reason.

Once you get old enough to the point where you cannot live your entire life all over again from day 1 and survive, you aren't old enough to start your life over, and therefore you aren't old enough to start again in another country.

Sad, but as you mentioned, it's my current estimate that 32 years old is the absolute cutoff point for moving to Japan.
