Although a license and annual physical evaluation are required in the US to drive vehicles over 10,000 pounds, there is no mandatory retirement age for truck drivers (airline pilots have to retire at 65). Many such truckers are in their 70s, with a few in their 80s and 90s.

River cargo has actually become MORE efficient over time, since modern marine control systems make it easier to sail large barge "tows" of multiple barges at a time. The constraints are the locks (the biggest problem, both size and capacity), and dredging (the entire Missouri River mostly goes unused by cargo ships because of simple lack of maintenance; Omaha used to be a major port).

Don't know if anybody has taken a long trip recently, but I'm pretty sure this has to do with the worsening of other drivers. Drive down I-95 from PA to FL and you will quickly see the insanity. People drive like maniacs, and whatever it is that is causing it is probably the same thing that is causing the extremism and school shootings. There is definitely a societal problem at the root of this, and I think it can hardly be blamed on age.

I learned about this as I considered getting into trucking because I like to travel and I like driving. Then I watched some truckers on jewtube and changed my mind quickly.

Some states (and even municipalities) have special divisions to make sure they have the resources to fuck with you every mile of your trip.

My uncle works in the industry and is retirement age but he likes to work dispatch after driving for over 20 years. They've begged him to drive again. But why?
Because he says all the young drivers won't show up to work, they fuck around, they don't get the delivery there on time. Worst of all, they all pretend injury, get workman's comp for 6 months, come back, get " injured " again, take 6 months workman comp, get injured again, take 6 months workman comp.
They can't seem to depend on younger drivers and it costs them a fortune.

I’m 25, drive for an expedite courier regionally all over the southeast. I’ve considered getting my CDL because the demand is so high, everyday on Craigslist it’s just filled with ads, but the box truck and cargo vans are cozy. but 1,300$ a week sounds pretty comfy too.
