I don't see how Elon Musk would be able to change that. At some point he would have to come down and correct some kind of a lie, but him correcting that lie would ruin his reputation.
Remember how when Trump ran for president there were stories about how Trump thinks all Mexicans are rapists. A fact checking site would have to correct it and say that it's false, but saying it's false would be career suicide.
Fact checking sites don't work, unless you can run it anonymously, but if you are going to do it anonymously then you are not going to get the publicity or the credibility for people to listen.
