I think historically there are countries who have had more and less fortunate geographic positions. Countries such as Poland and Ukraine were far away from any major trade routes and natural resources. I don't think Ukrainians are to blame for being poorer especially since they were hit by USSR way harder then we and they never had a chance to build their own independent economy since it's such a young country. I'd love to help them and us at the same time by expanding our business to their territory more than we do already and fueling both economies. Creating a federation with them would help but I don't think they'd want that because they value their sovereignity which I can absolutely respect.

I don't know much about Ukrainian history but I think there's gonna be a reason for everything. For example there's a brain drain going on in Ukraine. I see Ukrainian students in my university all the fucking time. I don't know since when they're being drain and to which countries they go but it definitly hinders their growth. True that Soviet industry needed a lot of modernization to compete, but heavy metallurgy was one of the biggest drivers of economic growth in post-Soviet Ukraine. You can't sit there and tell me with a straight face that having the biggest steel factories and a major chunk of Soviet military industry wasn't a major advantage.

Ukraine was started as fucking project by Austro-Hungary to promote seperatism in Imperial Russia and prevent Galician Ruthenians to symphatize with Russians (which they were doing). It was formed during communist rule by taking land from Russian proper to make new entity to weaken Russia inside Soviet Union. You have to understand Ukraine is to Russia what the USA is to England.
When they took that land, they started colonizing it away from the tatars. Pioneers and explorers moved there, and had their own identity, separate from the serf farmer or city intelligentsia identity of core Russians.

Novorossiya was a different community, Crimea was a different community. Russian writers and journalists write about visiting, buying property there, about how different people are and how different their spirit and views are.
Its a place settled by colonists, these are by definition more risk takers, more loud and extroverted, and by definition are from the low life mostly. A colony is never the same as the core territory, and over time it grows more different.

Ukraine was colonized by the russians away from the tatars like Finland was colonized by the swedes away from the natives, and ukrainians are different from the russians the same way fins today are different from the swedes, even if you are mostly swedish genetically.
