this. when i was a grad student a professor in another department got into deep shit for having an affair with an undergrad.
because of the scandal, his lab lost all of its funding - went from getting like 500k / year in grant money to under 10.
maybe this works for bullshit humanities professors where there's no grant money to be risked and they already have tenure, but otherwise it's a terrible idea.

Here is what I experienced so far:
