Why wouldn't they? The Catholic Church was for hundreds of years the biggest supporter of scientific inquiry in Europe, the vast majority of universities started off as Catholic institutions. You'd be surprised of how much of the "Religion vs Science" narrative was pure propaganda created by a few people during the enlightenment.
