People who go the hospital because they are suicidal aren't actually suicidal they just want attention. My wife is a nurse and her and her nurse friends always tell me about the mentally ill losers who come in and how pathetic they are. It's usually females and teenagers, males actually kill themselves when they are suicidal. They eat up so many resources from people who actually need help. This is true aswell. Also this The hospital is expecting insurance to pay ~30% of the bill which is closer to the actual cost. They don't expect people to pay it back when they don't have insurance so they just fuck up your credit. However they would really prefer to get that money so if you offer to pay a chunk of that bill they'll lower it for you sometimes. After all, you're far less likely to pay for 30% of the bill and still have your credit fucked than you are to pay for 100% of a lower bill in order to swave your credit.

Our healthcare system is very fucked up. But it's not as fucked up as people try to suggest. We treat everyone and we treat them quickly. We don't refuse service, we're thorough, and we typically do a good job. Aside from the cost the US probably has some of the best healthcare in the world, if not the best.

I've been hospitalized twice over the last 5 years for suicide attempts, first time from an OD, second time after I tried suffocation with a plastic bag + sleeping pills but both times someone walked in unexpectedly; first time my roomate, second time a gf. Then both times they forced me to stay in an outpatient mental hospital for 1-2 weeks and I was told if I left I would be committed and sent up the river to the place where they keep the schizos and be held there for 3+ months.

Hospitals have suicide prevention centers, so when people are having a crisis, and perhaps in a moment of lucidity they can tell themselves, "Hey, I need help. I need to go get help right now." If you then go to a hospital and talk to a crisis counselor/staff, they will ask you something like, "Do you feel like you want to harm yourself?" and when you say, "Yes", they force you (well, that sounds really harsh, but they do make you) stay for observation and evaluation. This means $$$, but at least you were helped.
