Pretty sure the need for corrective lenses has multiplied exponentially over the past 4 decades in most part due to the reduction in time spent outside by children - it's well known now that sunlight regulates the growth of eyeballs, and a reduction in sunlight causes the eyeball to elongate causing myopia.

This is in no way genetic, however there may be a link between children spending time indoors and an increase in their academic ability because they're busy being nerds.

Of course "intelligence" is largely genetic, although we don't yet understand it well enough to properly qualify that term. And while environment and the "nurture" end of things certainly plays a role, being so subjective to the experience of each individual, we don't understand it at all. Since the 90's, however, genetics has become a field with researchers lining up to lend their expertise. Look for more articles and studies on the "nature" end of things.
