I live just north of Richmond.
Look for a place to stay in Ashland, Mechanicsville, or Glen Allen. Much safer and cheaper, as well as small towns with a decent rural area. Commute to the city. Expect about 700 per month for a 1 bedroom, 950 for 2 bedroom. Also this behavior would be welcome.

In the city limits expect about 1k a month for a studio.
If you must live in the city avoid shockoe bottom. You'll find that even in virginia as long as you stay out of Richmond, Northern Virgina, and Hampton Roads, its the stereotypical cowboy hat wearing truck driving gun loving americans.

Also avoid blacks. Some can be cool but in RVA theyre the main source of crime. If you end up neutralizing or staying try to get q concealed carry permit or at least a firearm. In Virginia you do not need a permit to open carry a handgun so you can do that if need be.

A lot of people go to Virginia expecting it to be a stereotypical southern state and it is in some places, but it definitely isn't in Richmond. It is cosmopolitan meets rustic, industrious with a progressive climate. Once you leave Richmond, you will notice immediate changes. The moment you go passed the last exit into town on 95 south, you are in the south-south.

Yeah there's lots of art school fags and leftists in Richmond, and yeah there's a fair share of crime, but besides for that it's actually one of my favorite cities I've been to, and I've been all around America. Lots of good restaurants, breweries, stuff to do, trails, museums, etc. Plus it's only about an hour from the mountains one direction and a little over an hour the other way to the coast. And it's not nearly as expensive as my home state.

It's just like most cities. Some decent spots, some shitty spots. What makes it decent is that it's a relatively small city, so the area around richmond makes up for the city itself. You have short pump for families, Carytown for college kids, Mechanicsville for rural times, and youre close enough to VA Beach, D.C., and places like williamsburg/Yorktown that there's always something good to do that isn't your standard city affairs. Also charlottesville is less than an hour away if you want to rent a grey charger.
