Those types of filters don't remove protozoa. Mostly just turbidity and various solid impurities.
You would need to boil it. FYI, sloshing around water after boiling fixes the taste. Boiling removes a lot of oxygen. Oxygen helps a lot with taste.

It won't, you're right. The real way to do it is like my Grandpa. He'd cut holes in big tires and stack them up and fill them with dirt from a backho. Then he'd just put cut potatos in all the holes and it looked like a big potato tree. When it was time to harvest, he just pulled the stack over and sifted the dirt.
