What started happening was that when a person met a suitable sexual partner, their brains would get flooded with chemicals, building a strong emotional attachment to that one individual. Nowadays we romanticize a little much, so we might call that "love", but in reality it is an evolutionary adaptation, designed to push people into monogamous relationships. It was a very gradual process, but the end result was a fundamentally different (monogamous) society. The new arrangement wasn't quite as good for the alpha males (they still got to reproduce, just with one female instead of many), but now the rest of the male population gets to reproduce as well - and with their own genetic lineage now on the line, they had a strong and clear incentive to be productive as well, and the whole tribe was far more successful as a result.

So much more successful that they almost immediately stamped out all the local competition that did not adopt the same practice. This is the reason why monogamy is universal to human civilizations around the world and across different cultures - because of the clear advantage it offers to communities that practice it. And it is not only the case with humans either - many animal species that live in interdependent communities have run into the same problem of unproductive beta males, and many of them adopted monogamy for the same reasons.

In humans, the increase in productivity led to the creation of the first cities, where the communities were no longer quite as tightly knit, and the responsibility of providing for the children was now on the biological parents. This proved to be a great thing, as a greater percentage of the father's time, effort and resources was being invested into their own offspring, instead of it being distributed to the entire community - giving them an even stronger incentive to be productive, and a new evolutionary mechanism was now in place, as those who were not productive would watch their genetic lineage die away. Women quickly learned to identify and avoid such men.

This new monogamous culture is what some today might call "the patriarchy". It is a social contract that guarantees mating rights to beta males (who otherwise wouldn't get to reproduce), under the condition that they remain productive and useful to the rest of the society. It is a system designed not to opress women, but to incentivize every male in the society to be as productive as is humanly possible. And it is this highly productive system that finally broke 200,000 years of complete developmental stall and has driven us (in a relatively short period of time) from those disfunctional tribes to the modern, first world civilizations that we all get to enjoy today. Modern civilization is a product of the "patriarchy", and it is dependent on it for it's continued survival, as it is the only system we currently know of that leads to such high levels of productivity among males.

This is the reason why the leading positions in politics, business and almost every other field in modern society are dominated by men - because we live in a culture in which men are effectively blackmailed into being productive, because if we aren't we don't get to reproduce. At the same time, from our recent evolutionary past, men (again, specifically men) are also highly competitive with each other, because up until some 15,000 years ago, if we weren't we wouldn't get to reproduce. Again, the same did not apply to women. And being highly competitive is extremely important for success in any kind of free market system, which nowadays applies to almost everything.

Now, what the left has been doing over the past few decades is systematically tearing down this arrangement, by promoting promiscuity (especially among women), by promoting various forms of sexual deviancy, by instituting socialist economic policies (the worst of which are welfare benefits for single mothers, which effectively once again socialize the cost of having children), and thru various other attacks all aimed at undermining the family unit. Almost every social and economic policy proposed by the modern left in one way or another chips away at the fundamental pillar of civilization that is monogamy.

And as of late, people have begun noticing the gradual collapse of this system. The most visible example is the reaction of beta males, who (as the title always goes), are "pulling out of society". The various groups like MGTOW, incels, the so called "herbivore men" of Japan, or even the cliche stereotypes of "fat neckbeards in their mom's basements" are all examples of the exact same thing - beta males saying: "This system doesn't work anymore."

They are correct. It doesn't work because we've created a degenerate culture in which most women are not interested in faithfull, long term relationships - because the entire society is telling them they should be sluts, and be proud of it. Those who do want such relationships are often not interested in having children, for various bullshit reasons, or are already in their late 40's and are physically incapable of having children. Also, governments are taking more and more of men's money and giving it away to other people thru socialist programs instead of it being invested into their potential children. The family court system is so ridiculously broken that a woman can take away your children, your house, all of your property, completely destroy your life, and she can do that on a whim for no real reason at all. This system, where beta males would be useful, and in turn get to have a family and children - doesn't exist anymore. And if that's the case, then why would these men bother being productive? Why would they contribute to a society that offers nothing in return?

I have always thought that maslow's hierarchy of needs plays an important role of male productivity and creativity. Man finds it difficult to create, invent, or be productive until the "love/belonging" rung on the ladder has been reached. Personally, I've always been artistic, but never focused on my art when I was younger. All I wanted was a good woman so I went out and tried to meet girls for years. I wasn't learning or growing beyond my social pursuits during that time. Now I am on year 5 with my girlfriend and I spend much of my time drawing, 3d modeling, animating and writing. I needed that step to be done before I could focus on my works.

The problem is that they don't start with unrealistic standards, they just do not have a point of reference and they have no experience being social with women. Rejection is part of how you learn but it helps a lot to have talked to girls regularly during your adolescent years. Good points. I've read elsewhere about that disconnect of pre-sedentary and post-sedentary values. As you note pre-sedentary or at least pre-developed sedentary and fertility was a virtue while barrenness was a vice. Therefore a promiscuous woman who showed pregnancy was far from a liability, she was almost a guaranteed asset. That's not to say chastity would make someone very unattractive, but promiscuity was not such an albatross.

That changes when men begin to develop property through settling down with agriculture. Now a promiscuous woman is a literal liability. I also appreciate you bringing up that monogamy is universla to human civilization, as so often I hear polyamourous hacks trying to peddle the nonsense that it's not. I think it's subjective to a large degree. I've only ever had two simple standards, don't repulse me and be a good person. Every relationship I've ever had has been based on the latter for me, I thought the woman I was with was a good person, didn't care so much about her looks and the better of a person she appeared to be the more I found her attractive, and it was only when she showed her true colours that I lost what admiration I had for her and ended up being completely repulsed by her physicality.

I disagree with you about the blame for the eroding of the traditional arrangement being on the left. It is mostly a result of economic and cultural forces. The end, in the Western world, of an agricultural and industrial economy heavily reliant on male labour (therefore needing to incentivize his productivity through marriage and reproduction) and the dawn of a service economy more amenable to women and alphas, and the general prosperity naturally relaxing social norms (as experienced in previous civilizations such as Rome).

That's why I'm pessimist about changing this situation through political action. Only a major societal collapse, which we probably won't see in our lifetimes, could make beta male labour relevant again, and therefore give incentives to the promotion of traditional monogamy.
