We have to understand the circumstances under which it occurred. Armenia was a province of the Ottoman Empire during the first World War. In the first world war the Ottoman Empire found itself facing down the Empire of Russia. Russia had long held a dream of retaking the city of Istanbul, Constantinople. They wanted this not only for cultural reasons but for more practical military reasons as the Russian Navy was headquartered in the Black Sea. If Russia controlled the narrow Straits where the Black Sea meets the Mediterranean then the Russian Navy would have a much free-er hand. Toward this goal Russia invaded the Anatolian Peninsula from the East through Christian Armenia. Christian Armenians overwhelming sided with the Russian invader against their Muslim Turk overlords. This Russian invasion was successfully repulsed by Ottoman forces. During the "cleanup" there was a police action to roundup traitors within Armenia and that's where things got out of hand.
